The Chinook Musical Society
The
Chinook Musical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving our
membership access to high quality musical acts at reasonable prices by
hosting a series of concerts each year under the name "Saturday Night
Special". The Society strives to bring to the stage a range of entertainment
that will appeal to a diverse audience. Although the Society has
traditionally presented performers from the folk and country music genres,
we have ventured into blues, folk rock, western, and Celtic music without
sacrificing the quality that has become expected of our concerts. While we
do bring in acts from all over North America, we are especially proud to
showcase Canadian and Alberta talent.
Since our incorporation as a non-profit society in 1976, our group has presented concerts in three different southwest community centres in Calgary. The club has operated for the last several years from the Braeside Community Centre and has now become a part of the fabric of that community. Operated by an elected volunteer Board of Directors, the Society does not have paid staff but rather, relies on more than 60 volunteers to stage our concert season. Volunteers handle everything from planning and doing the bookings, to preparing food for concession, setting up tables and cleaning up. The Chinook Musical Society presents between 9 and 10 Saturday evening concerts per year, running from 7:00 p.m. to about midnight. Our house band, the Beagle Boys, opens the evenings and we continue with two sets from our headline act. In recent years, headliners have included Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch and Fats Kaplan, Lunch at Allens and, Connie Kaldor and Roy Forbes. Please note that all concerts are restricted to those of legal drinking age. The Braeside Community Centre allows us to seat 250 people for an evening concert. Virtually every event for the last 15 years has been a sell-out! Demand for tickets has been so strong that we now sell out all concerts before the season opener. However, tickets do become available prior to each show as member's plans change and some are willing to sell individual shows. To access these tickets, please check the ticket exchange on the Show Schedule page of the web site.Currently, season tickets sell for $225.00 for 9 shows and rush tickets are set at $25.00 for each show. Season tickets are sold out and we have a rather long waitlist for potential subscribers.
